Dad Hassebrock started out with 80 acres of land. He built a log cabin. Whenever he decided to build a larger home, he did want to build the house behind the log cabin, so he purchased 5 more acres of land. Years later, someone owned 40 adjoining acres. He approached Dad, but Dad wasn't interested since he didn't have the money. While he was planting the field with collard greens, the gentleman kept bugging Dad and finally told him that he was going to make him buy it by offering it too cheap. Dad asked him how much he wanted. He told Dad that he could have it by paying $100 down and $100 each year for the next 4 years. Dad questioned him about what if he didn't have the money in the future to make the payments. He was told not to worry if it took him more than 4 years to pay it off. Dad and the gentleman went to town that afternoon and signed the paperwork. (I learned at the reunion......that the real reason the man made him buy the land was because he was planting on the land!)

John William Hassebrock April 16, 1882 - May 20, 1950

John William Hassebrock and Martha were the parents to Fred, Clara, Feador, Arthur and Martin. John William and Martha's father were in a lightning rod business together. Their business led them from Illinois to down South. John William Hassebrock and Martha's father built a small log cabin in Molino. John William sent money to Martha to bring herself, the 5 children and their orphan nanny, Annie Slovak to Florida. Martha sent the children and Annie with a note to John William pinned inside of Fred's coat saying that she would not be moving to Florida. John William and Martha were divorced and John William and Annie Helen Slovak were married May 10, 1915 in Pensacola, Florida. Together they raised 12 children. Infant daughter Caroline died around 6 weeks of age from pneumonia. Son Manuel was born an invalid in 1936 and died in 1958. John William Hassebrock was hit by a bus and died May 20, 1950. Annie Helen Slovak Hassebrock had a blood clot on the brain and died April 6, 1943

Jennie & Freddie Gossett--A trip to Illinois to visit Uncle Martin & Aunt Irene also meant a visit with Aunt Irene's brother Freddie and his wife Jennie. After both Uncle Martin and Aunt Irene passed, we still made our visits to IL to visit Uncle Freddie and Aunt Jennie...as well as their visits to Florida to visit us. Uncle Freddie died of a massive heart attack in 1990. Aunt Jennie now lives in California with her son Mickey and his wife Joan. (Jornaled 2005)
